Nigeria president Muhammadu Buhari has again publicly addressed the ongoing issue on SARS as Nigerians worldwide are unrelenting to see the end of police brutality.
On Sunday 11 of October, 2020, the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu announced the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) a tactical unit under the Nigerian Police Force. Mr Adamu also ordered the immediate redeployment of operatives under the unit. He gave these mandates amongst other orders targeted at reforming the police.
However, there have been large call for the president to personal address the new development, which would serve as a validation to the pronouncement of Mr Adamu, the Inspector General of Police.
President Buhari in the broadcast said the disbanding of SARS is only the first step in our commitment to extensive police reform in order to ensure that the primary duty of the police and other law enforcement agencies is the protection of lives and livelihood of our people.
We will also ensure that all those responsible for misconducts and wrongful acts are brought to justice. We also deeply regret the loss of life of the young man in Oyo State during the recent demonstration and I have also ordered the investigation of the circumstance of his death” He said.
“Meanwhile it is important to recognize the vast majority of the Police Force are hardworking and diligent in performing their duties, and the few bad eggs are not allowed to tarnish the reputation of the Force” He added.
we also reported earlier today that American singer Trey song called the decision to redeploy says “BULLSHIT!!!” and that Nigerians are now trending 5for5 hashtag to press home new demands on SARS.
