5for5 is trending in Nigeria and many are probably wondering what it all means. As Nigerian youth troops out daily to protest against police brutality being perpetrated by the now dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a new hashtag #5for5 has been created to drive home a new demand.

SARS was a unit of the Nigerian Police that was notorious for illegal arrest, extortion and extra-judicial killings of Nigerian youths. On Sunday 11 of October the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu in a live broadcast announced the immediate disbandment of SARS and ordered their instant redeployment.

The police leadership presented five mandates that is targeted at reforming and reestablishing a policing system that is judicious and people friendly.

Today, Nigerian youths who are leading the protest across many cities in Nigeria have published a counter mandates with the hashtag #5for5 that is assumed to properly do justice to the dissolution of SARS

The protesters are demanding for the following

  1. Immediate release of all arrested protesters
  2. Justice for all deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate compensations for their families.
  3. Setting up an independent body to oversee he investigation and persecution of all reports of police misconduct (within 10 days)
  4. In line with the Police Act, psychological evaluation and retaining of all disbanded SARS officers before they are redeployed.
  5. Increase police salary so that they are adequately compensated for protecting lives and properties.
