In recognition of his efforts in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, Desmond Tutu was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

Using his position as a senior in the Anglican Church and the influence the Nobel Peace Prize brought him, he traveled wide and spoke elevating stories of Black South Africans and promoted his anti-apartheid message worldwide. He did this even when his allies (like Mandela) were incarcerated.

When Mandela was released after a 27-year imprisonment, Desmond Tutu
displayed solidarity by leading him to deliver his first public speech on a balcony in Cape Town City Hall.

Desmond Tutu’s life is “a testament to the hope and strength he placed on
reconciliation in the divided nation” – President Cyril Ramaphosa.
