Nigeria Men’s Basketball Team D’Tigers have come crashing out of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after an 80-71 loss to Italy on Saturday morning.
Going into the game, the No1 ranked African nation had it all to do after consecutive losses to Australia and Germany had them on the brink of elimination.
D’Tigers needed a win and other results to go their way to proceed to the next stage of the competition.
The game didn’t get off to the best start as a lot of sloppy plays saw Italy’s Basketball team take a lead of 29-17 in the first quarter.
D’Tigers brought their A-game in the next quarter, closing the gap to 40-39 by halftime.
The strong showing continued into the third quarter as the Basketball team gained a 7 point gap (63-56) to end the third quarter.
It all went downhill from there as FIBA number 10 ranked team Italy staged a strong comeback to end the game 80-71.
The late defeat means that the D’Tigers will exit the Tokyo 2020 Olympics without a win.
All attention switches to D’Tigress who take on Japan on Monday, with a chance to qualify for the next round if they win.
