Tokyo2020: Nigeria’s Basketball Team, D’Tigers Narrowly Loses to Germany

The D’Tigers of Nigeria were hoping to bounce back from their disappointing loss against the Boomers of Australia in a thrilling game against Germany on Wednesday morning. They, however, lost by just 7 points in the game that ended 99-92. This second loss in the competition is a big blow to their hopes of progressing past the preliminary round.


Germany took the first round at the Saitama Super Arena with 24 points against Nigeria’s 21. Nigeria fought for recovery and tied at halftime. The third round was evenly matched and ended 74-74. Their fourth-round, however, ended 18-25, which made the D’Tigers lose the game. Jordan Nwora again dropped a stellar performance with 33 points. Miye Oni garnered 15 points, both capitalizing on their three-pointers.

Germany lost their first game to Italy (92-82) and hoped for a win against Nigeria as the tough battle for automatic qualification to the quarter-finals. The African Champions also needed the win coming from their defeat against Australia (84-67).

The Nigeria women’s basketball team already lost to the USA women’s national team in a thrilling encounter that ended 81-72 on Tuesday. Ify Ibekwe was instrumental as Nigeria secured an early lead in the first quarter. However, it was the USA team who won in the end. The USA women’s basketball team has won all gold medals in the event since Atlanta 1996.

The D’Tigress will face France on Friday, hoping for a bounce back. The D’Tigers will lock horns with Italy on Saturday with the hope of fighting for moving on to the next round.
