“Heart Broken” Will Smith Resigns From The Academy After Slapping Chris Rock

• American actor, Will Smith has resigned from Hollywood’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

• This follows stern criticism from the media  after he went on stage and slapped Chris Rock during the 94th Academy ceremony

• Rock had made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett, who is suffering from Alopecia, a balding condition

Actor Will Smith resigned from Hollywood’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday.

In a statement issued by Will Smith and obtained by Variety, Will described his actions at the Oscars as “shocking, painful and inexcusable”. He went further to say that he would accept any additional consequences the Academy’s Board of Governors found fitting.

“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken,”

Smith’s resignation from the Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences is due to the global display of his assault on Chris Rock On the night of the Oscars.

This comes after he issued a public apology 24hours after the onstage assault on the comedian.  His apology came when the aftermath of his action became clear to him.

It will be recalled that the Actor accepted an award right after the onstage event, where he did not apologize to Chris Rock but to the crowd and the Academy organizers.
