Uche Eke Makes History for Nigeria at the Olympics

Uche Eke Makes History for Nigeria at the Olympics

  • 24-year-old Uche Eke is set to make history at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as the first gymnast to represent Nigeria
  • Since Nigeria started participating in the Olympics in 1952, the country has failed to present a gymnast until Uche came along
  • The gymnast whose father is a Nigerian also represented the country at the African Championships in Cairo, Egypt in May 2021

Have you ever seen a gymnast flying Nigeria’ colours at the Olympics? Definitely not but you will be seeing it for the first time in Tokyo.

This is because 24-year-old Uche Eke qualified to represent the country at the Olympic games which officially begins today.

Eke is the first person to represent Nigeria at the Olympics since the country’s first appearance in 1952.

The gymnast who is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Information will participate in his first game on Saturday, July 24.

Apart from his physical ability, Uche has performed greatly academically, which helped him win the Margaret Mann Award(an award for super academic ability and great professional performance).

Uche Eke was born to a Nigerian father Daniel Eke and his wife Tara and he grew up in the United States.

His father however ensured that he didn’t lose touch with his fatherland by making him spend every Christmas and New Year’s Day in Nigeria.

Uche represented Nigeria at the African Championships in Cairo, Egypt in May and maintains that he wants to offer so much back to the country.

“What’s driving me is that I want to give back to Nigeria every time I go.”

Even though Uche has been practising gymnastics since he was three, he has a difficult task on his hands to bring a medal back for the country but we’re rooting for him.
