COVID 19 Update: Pandemic Hits Nigeria Hard

184 new COVID 19 cases were recorded in Nigeria, according to the latest report by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)

Since Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced that Nigerians should brace up for the third wave of the pandemic, cases have been on the rise.
According to the latest update on the NCDC website, 184 new COVID 19 infections were recorded in Nigeria on Wednesday.
Although this is lower than the recorded cases in the previous update (238), it remains far above the average recorded case some weeks ago.
The latest cases of COVID 19 were recorded in seven states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory(FCT).
As expected, the majority of the new case (124) was recorded in the nation’s most populous state Lagos.
Rivers state was also hit hard with 27 new cases recorded. Sokoto state announced 9 while FCT and Oyo recorded 8 and 6 respectively.
Other states that reported COVID infections are Ekiti, Delta and Plateau with 5, 4, and 1 respectively.
This brings the total number of records COVID cases in Nigeria to 170,306 and more than 3,000 cases remain active.
Despite the high number of recorded cases, data retrieved from NCDC has shown that testing has reduced drastically.

Punch has reported that since the first case of Delta variant was recorded in the country, only 23 states and the FCT have been sending testing reports to the NCDC.
The 13 states that have failed to send an update to the NCDC are Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Ebonyi, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.
