Team Nigeria has registered its name on the medals table at the ongoing Paralympics in Tokyo.
The country won gold on Thursday morning when Powerlifter Latifat Tijani won the women’s 45kg event.
Tijani lifted 107kg helping her win the top prize as she defeated China’s Zhe Cui who had to settle for silver.
Tijani’s showing serves as an improvement on her performance at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio when she lifted 106kg and won silver.
The gold medalist powerlifter had won a bronze medal in the women’s 45 kg event at the 2019 World Para Powerlifting going into the Paralympics.

Before Latifat Tijani’s success, another Nigerian Yakubu Adesokan came close to winning a medal but he had to settle for fourth.
Adesokan lifted 155kg but it wasn’t enough to put him ahead of any of Qarada Omar Hamadeh of Jordan, Le Van Cong of Vietnam, and Mamnadov Parvin of Azerbaijan.
