The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has approved China’s Sinopharm COVID Vaccine for use in Nigeria.
The country has been allocated 7.7 million doses of the vaccine through the COVAX scheme, an organization that aims at providing vaccines to developing countries.
NPHCDA boss Dr Faisal Shuaib however did not give any information about when the vaccines will be received.
Nigeria has received almost 5 million doses of vaccine in August as the country intensifies its effort against the third wave of the pandemic.
Africa’s most populous country has only vaccinated a small portion of its population due to the low supply of the vaccine.
The country began phase 2 vaccination on Aug. 16 after receiving supplies of Moderna and Jansen vaccines.
Since the start of the pandemic, Nigeria has recorded 187,588 cases of COVID-19 while 2,276 have died from the virus.
