Lassa Fever Kills 59 in Nigeria as 358 Cases are Recorded in 2022

  • The Federal Government of Nigeria has reported 358 confirmed cases of Lassa Fever in Nigeria out of 1631 suspected
  • According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, 59 people have died from the disease in 2022
  • 19 states have recorded at least one confirmed case of the virus, across 65 local government areas.

The Nigeria Centre of Disease Control (NCDC) disclosed on Wednesday that 59 deaths have been reported from Lassa fever in the country, since the start of the year. This information was passed while confirming the infection of 7 new health workers, taking the total number of infected health workers in the country to 27. the new workers infected are spread across three states- Bauchi, Edo, and Ondo.

After announcing a major outbreak of the disease last year, the NCDC has divulged that the suspected cases of the disease in 2022 stand at 1,631, much higher than the cumulative figure of 704 for last year. The latest update states that 378 people are currently undergoing treatment for the disease in centres, while another 820 were undergoing contact tracing.

Lassa Fever

The NCDC’s latest report reveals that Lassa fever assessment has been carried out in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory and the confirmed cases are being treated in identified treatment centers across the state. Meanwhile, the seven Lassa fever molecular laboratories are also working in full capacity.
