Since receiving the cord blood, the woman has been in remission and free from the virus for 14 months
An American research team has reported that it has successfully cured a woman with HIV for the first time in history. Building on similar success against the disease in the past, the scientists at the HIV-cure research field used a stem-cell transplant method, which eradicated every trace of the virus in the woman. The research team now plans to increase the pool of people who are eligible to receive this treatment to several dozens yearly.
After recovering from the deadly disease, the patient steps into an exclusive club that includes two men, who scientists have cured of HIV. The case which was presented at the Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Denver, United States on Tuesday, is the first HIV cure involving umbilical cord blood to treat acute myeloid leukaemia.
Since receiving the blood transplant, the woman has been in remission and free from the disease for 14 months. She has also had no need for typical antiretroviral therapy commonly used for HIV patients.

The case of this woman is part of a wider study led by the University of California and John Hopkins University. It will follow 25 people with HIV who will receive stem cell transplants for the treatment of cancer and other terminal illnesses.
The patients first undergone chemotherapy before receiving the transplant. Scientists believe that individuals who receiving this treatment develop a strong immune system and it can serve as an HIV cure.
