Suspected Monkeypox Cases Increase by 100% in May 2022

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has in a recent update disclosed a 100% increase in suspected monkeypox cases across some states in Nigeria.

According to NCDC’s May summary report released on Sunday, 20 suspected cases were discovered during the month.

The 20 new suspected cases in May 2022 were from 11 states in Nigeria.
NCDC, on Sunday, confirmed a 100% increase in suspected monkeypox cases in its May summary report.
As of April, the total number of suspected monkeypox cases was 10 but that figure has doubled this month.
According to the report, the 20 suspected cases were found in 11 states:
- Lagos (5)
- Bayelsa (2)
- Adamawa (2)
- Rivers (2)
- Niger (2)
- FCT (2)
- Delta (1)
- Oyo (1)
- Kaduna (1)
- Edo (1)
- Gombe (1)
It is pertinent you know that from September 2017 to 29th May 2022, 578 total suspected cases of the monkeypox infection were reported in 32 states.

A report released by NCDC stated:
“This year, as of 29th May 2022, a total of 21 confirmed cases with one death have been reported from 9 states and the FCT – Adamawa (5), Lagos (4), Bayelsa (2), Delta (2), Cross River (2), FCT (2), Kano (2), Imo (1), Rivers (1). A death was also reported in a 40-year-old patient who had underlying co-morbidity and was on immunosuppressive medications.”
On 26th May 2022, it was reported that two suspected new cases of the Monkeypox virus have been discovered at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Lagos. According to sources, laboratory tests are yet to confirm the blood samples for the virus.
