Singaporean Woman Sentenced to 30 Years Imprisonment for Horrific Killing of Her Maid

  • Murugayan was charged to court for starving, torturing and beating her maid, leading to the untimely death of the 24-year-old
  • Gaiyathiri’s husband and mother are also set to face charges for assault of Piang Ngaih Don over 14 months

The Singaporean high court has sentenced 41-year-old Singaporean woman Gaiyathiri Murugayan to 30 years jail time over repeated assault of her maid Piang Ngaih Don, leading to her death.

Murugayan starved and tortured 24-year-old Piang throughout her employment, which lasted 14 months.

In February, 41-year-old Murugayan Gaiyathiri pleaded guilty to 28 charges which included homicide, voluntary causing hurt and starvation.

Piang came to work as a maid for Gaiyathiri in May 2015 and during her 14 months of work, she was kicked, starved and beaten with heavy objects.

Piang died on July 26, 2016, after an attack by Gaiyathiri and her mother caused a bone in her throat to get fractured.

She also suffered from severe irreversible brain damage during the attack.

A Channel News Asia reported claims that the maid was pulled by her hair at various times, causing a clump of her hair to remove.

Pronouncing judgement on Tuesday, Channel News Asia reported claimed that while Gaiyathiri suffered from mental problems, the crimes were committed on purpose.

Gaiyathiri’s husband, former police officer Kevin Chelvam also faces 5 charges related to the case.

Her mother, Prema Naraynasamy also faces pending charges for her role in the horrific death of Piang.
