Chelsea to Lose 5 Key Players as UK Sanction Restricts Transfer

  • The sanction has resulted in the London club being banned from transfer and contract renewal for the foreseeable future
  • The the sanction in place, the club lose 3 first-team players for free, as well as to other significant members of its squad

Chelsea has been all over the news since the UK government announced that it has imposed a sanction on the owner, Roman Abramovich, and 6 other Russians.

The long-expected move prevented the club from being sold after the Russian oligarch had announced plans to sell it last week.

With the sanction, Chelsea has been granted special permission to continue operation but it will be unable to sell tickets and merchandise. More importantly, the club’s transfer and contract renewal have been restricted.

With the contract renewal restriction in place, the club could be set to lose 4 senior players, whose contracts expire by the end of the season.

Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, and Charly Musonda are the senior players entering the final months of their contracts. The first three players are important members of the squad and losing them could be detrimental to the club’s operation next season.

Meanwhile, the club will also be unable to complete a transfer for Saul Niguez on a permanent deal if the ban stays in place. This means that the Spaniard is likely to return to his parent club, Atletico Madrid.

The club has revealed that it will appeal the government’s decision, to seek that it is allowed to operate with less restriction.
