The United Kingdom government has imposed sanctions on 7 Russian Oligarchs, including Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, freezing their assets in the country. With Abramovich sanctioned, his Chelsea sale will be put on hold.

In addition to Abramovich’s assets being frozen, he is subject to a prohibition on transactions with UK individuals and businesses. He has also been issued a travel ban and transport sanctions.
This is coming just over a week after the billionaire announced that he was putting the English club up for sale amid controversy that surrounded Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Since putting the club up for sale, the billionaire had received bids from several business persons including, Todd Boehly, Nick Candy, Tom Ricketts, and Robert Johnson.

Abramovich has been the sole owner of Chelsea football club since 2003 when he purchased the London team. Under his ownership, the club developed into one of the biggest football clubs in Europe, winning 2 Champions League and 5 Premier League Titles.

Asides from Abramovich, Oleg Deripaska was also one of the oligarchs to be sanctioned. Deripaska who was once Russia’s richest man is the founder of one of Russia’s biggest industrial groups, Basic Element, and Volnoe Delo, a charitable foundation.
