COVID 19: Finally Nigeria to Start Administering Second Batch of Vaccine

The Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 has announced that Nigeria is set to begin the second phase of vaccination on Tuesday, August 10.

The information was passed in a statement issued by a spokesman for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Willie Bassey.

This is coming after Nigeria received 4 million doses of the Moderna COVID 19 vaccine on the 1st of August.

The vaccines were delivered to Abuja by COVAX, a United Nations-backed initiative that aims to provide vaccines for up to 20% of developing nations populations.

This round of vaccination in Nigeria is the second phase after Nigeria secured four million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine for the first phase in March.

Nigeria plans to vaccinate at least 70% of its 200 million population by the end of 2022 to achieve herd immunity against the virus.

The Moderna vaccine is administered in two shots in which recipients receive the second dose 28 days after the first.

In the last report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the country currently has over 9000 active COVID 19 cases.
