The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has voiced his worries over the imminent fourth wave of COVID 19 in Nigeria.
While speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Abayomi warned that country could be at risk of increased cases due to passengers coming into the country from high-burdened countries.
He said that in the next few weeks many Nigerians from abroad will be returning home to celebrate Christmas.
The commissioner believes that several of these people will be coming from countries with mutated strains of the virus.
A portion of his statement reads:
“The potential drivers of the fourth wave in Lagos and Nigeria are passengers arriving, especially from heavy-burdened countries in Europe and the United States into Lagos. 86 percent of all inbound flights into Nigeria come through Lagos.”

Abayomi also went on to lament the low rate of vaccination in Nigeria. He claimed that the country is lagging in comparison to many nations that had vaccinated more than 50% of the eligible population.
“The other problem we have in Lagos and Nigeria is that our rate of vaccinations has been quite low; it is just below three percent, whereas our target should be over 40 percent.”

Abayomi believes that Lagos is susceptible to the fourth wave of COVID 19 if the government doesn’t take proper precautions.
