  • Nigeria recorded 7 deaths from COVID 19 complications on Monday, August 23, which brings the country’s total death total to 2,276 since the start of the pandemic
  • The country also recorded 565 new cases across the 22 states where testing was carried out on Friday
  • Lagos remains the epicentre of the virus, accounting for almost 40% of the total recorded infections

565 new COVID 19 infections were recorded in Nigeria on Wednesday, with Lagos leading the surge.

The country has been struggling to contain the spread of the virus since the more transmissible Delta variant made its way into the country.

The latest daily infections are slightly higher than the 388 cases that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported the previous day.

205 new cases were recorded in the Megacity Lagos on Wednesday, the most of any state in Nigeria.

Rivers followed with 73 new cases while Ondo recorded 63 infections in the latest report.

The Federal Capital Territory and Oyo completed the top 5 with 53 recorded daily infections each.

Ekiti had 37, Delta (24), Edo (20), Benue (12) while 6 infections each were recorded in Bayelsa, Kwara and Osun state.

Ogun and Adamawa complete the list of states with infections, recording 5 and 2 new cases respectively.

Seven States- Cross River, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Nasarawa, Plateau and Sokoto did not record any new infection despite testing.

8 people died from COVID 19 complications on Wednesday as the death toll climbed to 2,276.

The latest report brings the total recorded COVID 19 cases in Nigeria to 187,588.

As of today, 168,818 people have been discharged while 16,494 cases remain active across the country.

Meanwhile, various states have begun to receive vaccines as they kickstart phase 2 of vaccination.

Naija FM reported Ogun state health minister Tomi Coker confirming the reception of 187,426 doses of the Moderna COVID 19 vaccine on Friday to aid the state’s battle of the third wave.
