20 Nigerian athletes were supposed to represent the country in athletics events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
That number is down to 10 after 10 Nigerian athletes were declared ineligible by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of World Athletics.
The AIU has revealed that the athletes failed to comply with Rule 15 of World Athletics’ Anti-Doping Rules.
The AUI released a statement to this effect on Wednesday, although it failed to reveal the names of the athletes.
The AIU started that countries from “Category A”, which Nigeria belongs to are expected to comply with certain rules and the athletes didn’t.
The rule can be seen below.
An athlete from a ‘Category A’ country must undergo at least three no-notice out-of-competition tests (urine and blood) conducted no less than 3 weeks apart in the 10 months leading up to a major event.”
The Chairman of the AIU Board also urged countries to support their athletes by ensuring that they comply with anti-doping rules.
