One of Nigeria’s hopes for another medal at the Tokyo Olympics is over in the early stages.
The women’s team have been knocked out of the 4 X100 metres relay event after finishing 6th in the race against 7 other teams.
The squad which comprised Tobiloba Amusan, Grace Nwokocha, Patience George and Ese Brume, finished in a time of 43.25 seconds.
The recent showing at the Olympics is short of Nigeria’s best this season, 42.97 which was run at Lagos on June 19.
Germany came first in the heat, finishing in 42.00 seconds, their best time for this season.
The European giant was followed by Switzerland who finished in 42.05 seconds and China came third in 42.82.
The top three teams will qualify for the next round of the event at the expense of Poland and Brazil who finished fourth and fifth respectively in 43.09 and 43.15 seconds.

Meanwhile, Nigeria all encountered disappointment in the men’s shot put event.
Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi who qualified for the final ended in 12th place, the lowest position of all finalists.
Enekwechi’s best in this round was 19.74m thrown on his third attempt after fouling in his first and throwing 18.87m in his second.
