Microsoft has decided to join the virtual reality race and compete with Facebook (Meta), according to Bloomberg.
The software company has disclosed that it will adapt its software products to create a virtual reality setting, similar to the one launched by Facebook.
Microsoft’s foray into the VR space will come in the form of a collaborative platform called Mesh which will be launched in early 2022.
Mesh which will be integrated into Teams will allow customers to chat and share office files using digital avatars.
The company sees Mesh as a valuable project that will reduce the reliance on video calls for virtual business communication.
With Mesh, users will be able to represent themselves in meetings with 3D avatars without the need for VR headsets.
The news comes only a few days after Facebook rebranded itself to Meta and allowed that it had been working on Metaverse-like projects.
Verge has predicted that two tech giants likely compete in the metaverse space for years to come.
