Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company is set to change its name.
The billionaire announced the name change on Thursday, stating that the parent company will now go by the name “Meta”.
The name change comes amid crises for the social media company and as it tries to pivot ambitions for new virtual reality business “metaverse”.
The company has disclosed that its social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp will keep their names under the rebranding.
While making the announcement during the virtual conference, Zuckerberg said:
“I am proud to announce that starting today, our company is now Meta. Our mission remains the same, still about bringing people together, our apps and their brands, they’re not changing,”
The CEO disclosed that the vision and target of the company remain the same, in addition to diversification into the virtual reality industry.
Recently, the company disclosed that it was set to invest $10 million into the metaverse this year to kickstart the new project.
