– Jighere, in a lengthy update on his official Facebook account admitted he’s leaving because of unpaid prizes owed to him by the Nigerian government.
– The brainy sportsman however made it clear that he would be stopping at nothing to recover his money
Wellington Jighere, former world scrabble champion said he is retiring from the brainy sport that has brought him international fame but little fortune.
He said via a post on his Facebook account that he has opted to end his involvement with the sport over several unpaid and heavily taxed winnings by the Nigerian Scrabble Federation (NSF).
Jighere was the winner of the world championship in 2015. He also claimed the African championship on two occasions and was the Nigerian champion a record breaking 12 times.
The champion however made it clear about his next line of action. He said hat he’s prepared to go to war to ensure all that his due to him are fully paid which notably includes:
1) African Scrabble Championship, Accra 2010: $5,000 (five thousand US Dollars) left unpaid after ten years.
2) Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics 2017: Another $5,000 (five thousand US Dollars) left unpaid three years and counting.
