There seems to be no stopping Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo as he hinges closer to a new football record.
The 5 time Ballon d’Or winner scored two goals yesterday to become only the second men’s player with 100 international goals. The Juventus forward scored a stunning freekick against Sweden to open the scoring and hit the 100 goal mark.
Ronaldo went ahead to score a second goal in Portugal’s Nations League victory on Tuesday. The second goal was just as impressive as the first, as he beat the Swedish goalkeeper with a dipping shot.
The 35 year-old Juventus forward is now only 8 goals shy of equaling the men’s record for international goals. This record is currently held by Iran’s Ali Daei, who scored a whopping 109 international goals during his playing career. Ronaldo’s zeal and hunger show that the odds are in his favour to surpass that record before hanging his boots.
This is not the first time the Juventus forward has delivered a masterclass against Sweden. During the world cup qualification playoff in November 2013, Portugal had to deal with a Swedish team that had Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, he was able to score 3 goals to send his team through, even though Ibrahimovic scored two goals.
The closest active player to Ronaldo is Sunil Chhetri but the Indian forward is already 36 and doesn’t have time on his side. Lionel Messi on 70 goals is 33 years old and he also doesn’t stand a good chance of reaching that Milestone.
The next step for Ronaldo will be to break Daei’s record. The Portugal ace will have a chance to do that as Portugal face France (x2), Sweden, and Croatia before the end of the year.
