Governor Nyesom Wike of River State has ban any form of protest in River State, particularly any demonstration from those campaigning for the end of the SARS.
On Sunday 11 of October, 2020, the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu announced the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) a tactical unit under the Nigerian Police Force accused of extortion, torture and murder. Mr Adamu also ordered the immediate redeployment of operatives under the unit. He gave these mandates amongst other orders targeted at reforming the police.
In a statement released yesterday, the Governor Wike warned against any demonstration and Wike warns that violators will be persecuted.
The statement read “The Rivers State Government hereby wish to inform the general public that all forms of protests have been banned throughout the State. Therefore, all proposed protests under #EndSars Campaign are hereby prohibited.
“Government took this decision because the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had already scrapped the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. Therefore, there is no need for any form of protest against a Unit of the Police Force that no longer exists.
“Parents and Guardians are therefore advised to ensure that their children or wards do not violate this order. Law enforcement agencies are also directed to ensure that the ban is enforced and that violators are brought to book.”
Yesterday, Nigeria president Muhammadu Buhari again publicly addressed the ongoing issue on SARS as Nigerians worldwide are unrelenting to see the end of police brutality.
We also reported that American singer, songwriter, rapper, and actor Trey Song has voiced his concern over the police decision to redeploy SARS after the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu announced the immediate disbandment of the police unit.
