Electricity distribution companies in Nigeria started the year with a further hike in electricity tariffs following a new instruction from the Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC to set up a reviewed price for electricity in the country.

Starting from January 1, DisCos would be charging a new tariff in an order signed by Sanusi Garba, Chairman of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission.

According to the new tariff increase, all customers would pay the same tariff regardless of allotted band  customer is in  and some would see as much as 120% depending on the regularity of electricity in the area and the distribution company.

In a statement issued by NERC regarding the widely publicised January 1 tariff increase, the commission while confirming the development however stated  that though tariff was increased, it is not a 50% hike. NERC clarified that the tariff was adjusted from N20 to N40 kwh and also adding that band D and E (with less than 12hoirs light per day) would remain subsidised.

The commission further explained that the reason for the tariff increase was as a result of many factors including power generation, inflation rate and exchange rate.

Meanwhile, we earlier reported that an Akwa Ibom based magistrate, Richard Bassey, reportedly collapsed on Tuesday at the gate of the Governor Ben Ayade’s office on the second day of the protest over unpaid twenty-four months salary.
