Apple Music Awards: Wizkid Wins Artist of the Year
Nigerian music star Wizkid has won the African artist of the year award in the Apple’s Music Awards 2021
The Grammy-winning artist was proclaimed the winner of the award in a post by Apple via its official website
While receiving the award Big Wiz thanked Apple and expressed his pride to be representing the continent
Grammy Award-winning Nigerian star Ayo Balogun AKA Wizkid has been crowned the winner of the Artist of the Year award for Africa at the Apple Music Awards 2021.
The artist’s win was announced by Apple via its official website on Tuesday. Big Wiz was one of the 5 musicians to emerge artist of the year for their respective regions.
The achievement of the musician within the time considered was listed on the website as seen below:
“In October 2020, he released ‘Made in Lagos’, his critically acclaimed and most commercially successful album, which included his hit song “Essence,”
Since being released, “Essence” has generated 125 million plays on Apple Music and it has been Shazamed more than 2.8 million times.
In the past year, Wizkid was the most streamed musician in Africa on Apple music and his music charted in the Daily top 100 in over 60 countries.
In addition to this, his international recognition has grown significantly as he got 250% more monthly plays on Apple music outside Africa.
While receiving the award, Wizkid thanked Apple music and said:
“It’s a blessing to get to do what I do, and I’m proud to be representing Africa.”
The winners of the artist of the year in other regions are Aya Nakamura, RIN, Official Hige Dandism, and Scriptonite. Meanwhile, the Weeknd was crowned Global Artist of the Year.
