One of Europe’s top clubs and 2020 Champions League finalists, Paris Saint-Germain has shared its interest in the metaverse and is now developing a strategy to secure its name for use in the virtual world.
On March 16, the club signed a series of trademark applications that will allow its brand to offer a number of services including software, memorabilia, trading cards, and non-fungible tokens.
The trademark application seeks to allow services such as downloadable audio and video recordings, as well as other multimedia relating to sports, all authenticated via NFTs. In addition to this, the French club has included cryptocurrency wallet software in its filing.
According to Michael Kondoudis, a patent attorney that shared the news on Twitter, the filing serves as a logical step that will protect the brand as it movies into the metaverse.
Paris Saint Germain is not the first top European club that is looking to capitalize on the potential of the metaverse. FC Barcelona has also disclosed plans to make a move into the metaverse as well as providing offerings of NFT products. Manchester City is also planning to develop the world’s first metaverse stadium, where live matches can be watched virtually by fans.
