Last season’s champion’s league finalists announced on Friday, February 18 that it had signed a three-year agreement with Sony, that will involve the use of imaging analysis and skeletal-tracking technology from Sony’s subsidiary, Hawk-Eye.

The deal will also see Sony begin the construction of a virtual replica of Manchester City’s stadium, the Etihad in the metaverse. The metaverse stadium will serve as the team’s central hub in the virtual world when it is completed.

As COVID 19 continues to be a menace, hampering travel options for many, the virtual stadium will give fans the opportunity to watch games in the Metaverse from the comfort of their homes.

City’s Football Group’s chief marketing officer, Nuria Tarre had the following to say about the metaverse stadium:

“The whole point we could imagine of having a Metaverse is you can recreate a game, you could watch a game live, you’re part of the action in a different way, through different angles, and you can fill the stadium as much as you want because it’s unlimited, it’s completely virtual.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool Echo has reported that premier league rival Liverpool may follow suit and begin the construction of its own metaverse stadium to boost revenue.
