As the world is getting used to the change of power in Afghanistan, recent happenings have suggested that a lot of change is still to come from the Taliban’s takeover.
A spokesman for the Taliban Zabiullah Mujahid told women to stay at home while speaking at a press conference on Tuesday.
The spokesperson ordered women not to go to work for their own safety because the soldiers are not trained to respect women.
Mujahid stated the stay at home order was only temporary and it allows the group time to ensure that women’s rights are not violated.
“We are happy for them to enter the buildings but we want to make sure they do not face any worries,” he said. “Therefore, we have asked them to take time off from work until the situation gets back to a normal order and women related procedures are in place, then they can return to their jobs once it’s announced.”
The recent statement has undermined the group’s effort to convince the world that women’s rights will not be violated following their takeover.
The last time the Taliban was in power between 1996 and 2001, the militants banned women from work and leaving their homes unaccompanied.
Meanwhile, the world bank has announced that it is pausing financial support to Afghanistan amid worries about the fate of women.
