UEFA Makes Shocking Champions League Changes as Talks of Super League Re-emerge

  • UEFA has revealed plans to revamp the format of the Champions League from the 2024/2025 season onwards
  • The new format will feature more teams competing for the trophy, and 100 additional fixtures
  • Instead of the traditional group stage gaming system that has 4 teams competing for a round of 16 places in 8 different groups, there is one big league

Almost a year after talks of the Super League emerged and disappeared, UEFA has tweaked the format of the Champions League, making shocking changes to the competition.

UEFA Champions League

The new format of the Champions League will be introduced from the 24/25 season onwards, and it features more teams competing for the prestigious trophy.

Unlike the traditional group stage which includes 4 teams competing in 8 different groups before the knockout rounds, the format now has one big league. In this league, each team will play a total of 10 matches (5 home and 5 away fixtures).

At the end of the group stage, the top 8 ranked teams will qualify for the round of 16 and will be joined by 8 teams through playoffs.

The teams that finish between 9th and 24 on the table, will play two-legged play-offs to secure a place among the last 16. The teams that finish 25th and below will automatically be knocked out and will not drop down to the Europa League.

From the round of 16, the tournament will be played according to the current format. The same format will also be followed by the Europa and Conference League.
