 Jose Peseiro: NFF Appoints 62 Year Old as New Super Eagles Head Coach

  • The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Jose Peseiro as the Head Coach of the men’s football team.
  • The appointment of the Portuguese manager takes effect immediately and Finidi George will serve as his assistant.
  • Peseiro has served as the manager of teams such as Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto, and Sporting Braga.

The Nigeria Football Federation on Sunday announced the appointment of Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the National football team, the Super Eagles.

The deal was confirmed by the spokesperson for the NFF, Ademola Olajire. He disclosed that the appointment of the Portuguese is with immediate effect but subject to Mr. Peseiro and the NFF signing agreed terms.

The statement from Mr. Olajire partly reads:

“Peseiro is expected to lead out the Super Eagles for the first time during the upcoming tour of the United States of America, during which the three-time African champions will slug it out with Mexico and Ecuador ‘A’ Teams in prestige friendlies.”

“The Eagles will tango with the El Tri at the AT & T Stadium in Dallas, State of Texas on Saturday, 28th May before flying to New Jersey to confront Ecuador at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison on Thursday, 2nd June,”

The NFF also announced that former national team player. Finidi George will serve as the assistant coach to Peseiro while Salisu Yusuf was hired as the second assistant. In addition to his role, Yusuf will serve as the Head Coach of the CHAN and U23 National Teams.

Other appointments that were made include Usman Abdallah as the third assistant, Ike Shorounmu as the Goalkeepers’ Trainer, and Eboboritse Uwejamomere as the Match Analyst.


62-year-old Jose Peseiro is a former Portuguese striker and he has varied experience in football management. He has served as the coach in some of Europe’s top teams such as Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto, and Braga.
