AFCON 2021: 8 Dead and Many Injured in Cameroon vs Comoros Match

8 people have been killed in a stampede that occurred after the AFCON 2021 Cameroon vs Comoros match at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde on Monday.

In a video making the rounds on the internet, football fans struggling to get access into the stadium was the cause of the stampede.

Crowds attempted entering the stadium through the southern entrance to watch the host nation in its round of 6 clash.

Although, the stadium capacity is usually limited to 60,000 for other matches, when the Indomitable Lions play, over 80,000 fans are allowed into the stadium.

AFCON 2021

Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that investigations are ongoing.

According to preliminary report from the health ministry that was obtained by Naija FM, the 8 deaths that were recorded are 2 women and 4 men in their 30s, 1 child, while one body has been retrieved by the family members of the deceased.

The ministry revealed that when there tried to transport the injured to the hospital after the incident, the ambulances were delayed by heavy traffic.

The AFCON 2021 round of 16 clash between Cameroon and Comoros ended 2-1, in favor of the host nation.
