Super Eagles: Coach Eguavoen Reveals Reason for Shocking AFCON 2021 Loss

  • The Super Eagles of Nigeria were eliminated from the AFCON 2021 tournament after a shocking loss against Tunisia on Sunday
  • The interim head coach of the team, Augustine Eguavoen has claimed that the team did not deserve to lose the round of 16 game
  • Eguavoen claims that the team’s chances were hurt by a bad refereeing decision which saw Alex Iwobi sent off

Super Eagles Interim coach Augustine Eguavoen opened up about the elimination of his team on Sunday, saying that they did not deserve to lose against Tunisia in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout game.
Nigeria crashed out after a slim 1-0 defeat in a match where Everton forward Alex Iwobi was sent off for a bad tackle in the 66th minute.

The North Africans will now advance to the quarter-finals of the competition where they will take on Burkina Faso at the Stade Adijia stadium.

Speaking at the post-match conference after the defeat, Eguavoen claimed that a bad officiating decision cost his team’s elimination from the tournament in Cameroon.
He said:

“We tried to come back after the Tunisia goal, and we chased the game. But then we got a red card… It was clear that the officiating wasn’t fair”

The coach has however urged the players to put the loss behind them as they prepare to face Ghana in March for a spot at the FIFA 2020 World Cup in Qatar.
