NAFDAC Bans Alcohol Production in Sachets and Bottles

  • The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has banned the registration of sachets and small volume PET bottles

  • Alcoholic drinks in sachets are expected to be phased out in Nigeria before the end of 2023

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has banned companies from registering alcohol in sachet and small volume PET glass bottles below 200ml.

The move was made by the food and drug agency as part of an effort to curb the abuse of alcohol in the country.

Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye confirmed the development and explained the registration process for new alcoholic drinks in sachet and bottles.

According to Adeyeye, Manufacturers of low volume alcohol beverages (200ml), with laboratory reports that ascertained their safety had been directed to reformulate their products.

She also stated that the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) had been given orders to carry out a sensitization campaign against the consumption of alcohol by people below the age limit.

It will be recalled that NAFDAC had announced plans to totally ban the production of alcohol drinks in sachets by 2023/2024, adding that the ban will be carried out in phases.

Adeyeye explained that producers of alcohol in sachets and small volumes agreed to cut production by 50% from January 31st, 2020, while the products will be completely phased out by 31st January 2024.
