The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the approval of the Sinovac COVID vaccine for emergency use.
This listing paves a way for the Chinese vaccine to be used in poor countries.
WHO’s approval will also allow the vaccine to be included in the COVAX initiative, a programme that provides vaccine to poor countries.
The WHO’s panel of experts said that the Sinovac vaccine is recommended for adults above the age of 18 and it is protective in elderly people.
Although the meeting began on May 5, a decision was made regarding the safety of the vaccine after they view the latest clinical data on its safety and efficacy.

The Director-General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised the approval of the vaccine, stating that the vaccine is safe and easy to store for poor countries.
The Sinovac COVID vaccine is the eighth to be approved and the third from China.
The vaccine prevents symptomatic diseases in 51% of receivers and it prevents chronic COVID hospitalization in 100% of the vaccinated.
