Pfizer Inc. has agreed to a deal with the Africa Centres for Disease Control to supply Africa with its Paxlovid COVID pills, aiding the country’s battle against COVID 19.
The director of the Africa CDC, John Nkengasong announced the collaboration, disclosing that a document outlining the agreement is in the African Union’s legal office. A formal announcement is expected to be made by the CDC when AU’s legal office gives the green light.
Nkengasong also revealed the Africa CDC plans to use a combination of approaches in its battle against the pandemic.

The continent is seeking to secure supplies of the Paxlovid COVID pills amid concerns that poorer countries could be left behind when the demand rises. Africa has received the lowest supply of vaccines so far, with just 13% of the continent’s eligible population having been vaccinated.
As of March 11, 2022. Africa’s confirmed cases of COVID 19 stands at 11,297,714, while over 256,741,258 people have been vaccinated for the disease. The continent’s reported death is at 250,551, while 10,417,806 have recovered from COVID 19.
