Pharmaceutical company, Pfizer is set to test a pill that could be the cure for COVID-19.

The pill, a ‘protease inhibitor’ was designed to attack the spine of the virus and prevent it from replicating in other parts of the body.
The tests are being carried out at two unknown facilities in Belgium and the United States.
60 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 60 have been chosen to receive the first pill.

If the medicine trial is successful, a cure for COVID could be available before the end of the year.
The inhibitor being tested is the PF-07321332.
According to the director of medicinal chemistry at Pfizer, Dafydd Owen, the antiviral medicine was developed during the pandemic.
The first seven milligrams of the pill were developed in July 2020 by October, over 100 grams had been made.

To date, the drug has not been administered to humans but the safety has been studied in animals and it posed no significant risks.
