Nigeria is set to begin COVID 19 vaccination with the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine after the government officially kickstarted the distribution of the vaccine on Tuesday.
The vaccine movement was disclosed by the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire while he was speaking at the SCALES 2.0 strategy, a program that entails the integration of COVID vaccination with routine childhood immunization for eligible adults 18 years upwards, and children below two years, respectively. SCALES is an acronym of service delivery, communication, accountability, logistics, electronic reporting, and supportive supervision for the ongoing vaccination.

Mr. Ehanire divulged that Nigeria had received an adequate supply of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, with over 30 million doses in stock. He also urged all eligible people who are yet to receive their vaccine to visit the nearest vaccination centre to get it. According to the minister, the single-dose vaccine offers the same protection as receiving two doses of AstraZeneca, Pfizer- BioNTech, and Moderna vaccines.
The minister also gave a report on the country’s vaccination progress so far. He revealed that over 20 million doses of vaccine have been administered so far, representing more than 18% of the country’s eligible population as of February 18 this year.
