The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Olorunmimbe Mamora made this statement during an interview with the PUNCH.

Mamora disclosed that COVID cases had continued to increase in the country, with over 5,398 recorded between December 6 and 15.

He added that the government plans to strengthen existing measures to stop the drastic spread of the virus.

While giving his take on the rise in cases, the President, Guild of Medical Directors, Dr. Abiodun Kuti stated that the rise may be as a result of travelers coming into the country from Europe and America.

The rise in cases may however also be attributed to the emergence of the Omicron variant, which was first discovered in South Africa last month.

Earlier research has shown that this strain of the virus may be more transmissible than other variants.
