COVID 19 Vaccines are Effective For Cancer Patients- Study

  • Cancer patients are at increased risk of severe illness and death from COVID 19 due to their weakened immune system
  • But now, a study has shown that vaccination can help limit the risk of death from COVID among cancer patients
  • The study involved more than 1,000 patients with a variety of blood cancers that received Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines

Cancer patients are at increased risk of severe illness and death and COVID 19 because their immune system has been weakened by disease.

However, a recent report has shown that cancer patients can benefit from the effect of COVID 19 vaccines.

The study was carried out on more than 1,000 patients with varying levels of organ and blood cancer who were administered two shots of Moderna or Pfizer vaccines or a shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

It was recorded that patients who received the J&J vaccine had less immune response than those that received the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine.

The result however showed that no matter the vaccine received, most cancer patients’ immune responses were enough to protect them from severe COVID 19 illness.

Associate professor at Harvard Medical School revealed that the data suggested that cancer patients should receive mRNA vaccines and those who received the J&J vaccine should consider additional doses.

The study also revealed that cancer patients who had prior COVID infection had a better immune response to the vaccine.
The immunity was lesser in older people and immunity triggered by all the vaccines declined over time.
