COVID 19: China on Lockdown as Omicron Spike Triggers Surge in Cases

  • China reported thousands of new COVID 19 cases across the country on Sunday
  • The National Health Commission has declared the surge in cases, the worse outbreak of the virus in the country since early 2020
  • The outbreak has caused a lockdown in cities and factories of the country, with more than 17 million people forced to stay at home in Shenzhen

It’s been over two years since COVID 19 became a global menace and the effects of the virus do not appear to be waning. Even China which seemed to have gotten the spread of the disease under control is now experiencing another wave.

On Sunday, the Asian giant reported its worst outbreak of the virus in the country since Wuhan in early 2020.

According to the National Health Commission, 2,125 cases of the disease were recorded in 58 cities in 19 provinces across the country. This marks the 4th consecutive day that the country has recorded more than 1,000 COVID 19 cases.

More than 10,000 cases have been reported since the latest outbreak of the virus began in early March.

The continuous rise in cases has forced the Chinese government to impose lock down on two major cities in the country.

Shenzhen a city that borders Hong Kong recorded 66 positive cases on Saturday. In a bid to curtail the spread, health authorities have announced a lockdown order that will run from March 14 to March 20.

All businesses in the city would suspend operations or work from home unless they’re deemed essential or supplying Hong Kong. Also, Shenzhen will conduct 3 rounds of mass testing for residents during the lockdown.
