The European Union has sent a shipment of 1,936,050 doses of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID vaccine to Nigeria.
The delivered vaccine was reportedly donated by three countries- Finland, Greece, and Slovenia. Officials have also disclosed that more vaccine donations will be received in the coming weeks.
The donation follows a pledge that was made by the European Union to African countries through the COVAX initiative launched by the World Health Organization.
The program aims to ensure that vaccines for Coronavirus are extended to even the World’s poorest countries.
EU ambassador to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi disclosed that the COVID vaccine donation was a part of 20 million J&J doses pledged by EU member states to Nigeria.
Taking delivery of the vaccine, the Executive director of Nigeria’s National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Faisal Shuaib disclosed that the received vaccines will expire in August 2023. This will allow the company enough time for distribution and administration.

It will be recalled that the government lamented in December last year that over 1 million vaccine doses delivered to the country had expired and had to be destroyed. The shelf life of this vaccine is the longest that Nigeria has received so far.
Dr. Shuaib commended the EU for their donation and urged Nigerians who hadn’t received their vaccine to register and get their jabs.
