Microsoft has disclosed that it plans to buy gaming giant Activision Blizzard in a deal worth $68.7 billion.

The deal which will be the biggest in Microsoft’s history and one of the largest overall is expected to be completed in 2023.

The move will allow the tech giant to take ownership of popular gaming franchise Call of Duty and others like Warcraft and Overwatch.

The company has signaled its intent to help them grow their gaming business across mobile, PC, and console platforms.

It is expected that it will also be included in Microsoft’s journey as the company navigates its way in the Metaverse race with Meta.

Confirming the deal, chairman and CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella said:

“We’re investing deeply in world-class content, community, and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive, and accessible to all.”

Activision Blizzard has nearly 10,000 employees across the world and some of its games, Call of Duty and Candy Crush are among the most popular globally.

At the moment, it is not clear if Activision Blizzard games, which at the moment can be played on both Microsoft and Sony consoles will become exclusive to Microsoft’s Xbox.

However, Activision Blizzard games will be brought to their Game Pass subscription service.
