8 people have been arrested in China on suspicion of involvement in a “rug pull” scam involving cryptocurrencies.
The cryptocurrency scam suspects were accused of obtaining 50 million yuan (about $7.8 million) from their unsuspecting victims.
Hundreds of people have lost their money after placing it in the project which they believed to be a legitimate investment opportunity.
They eventually lost contact with the project’s founders and it dawned on them that it was all a swindle when the project’s website was taken down.
A statement from the police states:
“The case involved a huge amount of money, a large number of people involved, and the masses suffered heavy losses.”
The report from the police revealed that the smart contract code used for the crypto project had a passage that the project owners used to access investors’ money without their consent.
Property purchased with the stolen funds by the suspects such as houses and luxury cars has since been seized by the police.
Further efforts are in motion to reconcile the victims with their lost funds.
Cryptocurrency scams have been on the rise as more people make their way into the world of digital currency investment.
