Tech giant Google announced on Wednesday that it was introducing new privacy restrictions on Android devices, similar to changes made by Apple last year.
The company revealed that it is developing replacements for its advertising ID aimed at stepping up the privacy of users’ devices. It should be noted that digital IDs in smartphones are used by companies to track and share information about consumers.
The biggest losers in these changes will be companies like Facebook that rely on tracking users across apps.
When Apple introduced similar privacy changes, Facebook’s parent company Meta claimed to have been heavily affected by them. The company stated earlier this year that the privacy changes will decrease its sales by about $10 billion.

The news greatly contributed to the fall of Meta stock, wiping $232 billion from the company’s market cap in a single day. This follows a valuation of more than $1 trillion for the tech giant only last year June.
Google said it will continue to support the current identifiers for the next two years, giving benefitting companies enough time to implement changes.
