The network collapse was one of the largest ever, as billions of users worldwide struggled to access their accounts
Facebook has disclosed the reason for the global collapse of its system for more than 7 hours on Monday.
In a blog post that was released on Tuesday, the company claimed that the downtime was caused by an error during maintenance.
Facebook Vice President of engineering Santosh Janardhan revealed that the company’s engineers issued a command that disconnected its network from the rest of the world.
The company confirmed that the outage was not caused by malicious activity as previously propagated on social media.
Web monitoring firm Downdetector stated that the outage was the largest that it had ever recorded.
It denied billions of users on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp access to their accounts for several hours.
Asides from the downtime affecting online individuals and businesses, it also denied employees access to the company’s internal tools.
It was even made to be more catastrophic because the outage affected tools that engineers will normally use to fix such problems.
Also, it took the company extra time to get staff inside to fix the servers due to the high stem security put in place.
Following the restoration of network connectivity, Facebook expressed worries that its websites and apps will crash due to the surge in traffic.
