Barcelona Sacks Ronald Koeman after 14 Months as Coach

Following the continuous poor performance of the team, Barcelona has fired Ronald Koeman as their coach after 14 months. This was announced in a brief statement published on the club’s official website last night.

The statement thanked the former coach for his service to the club and note that Koeman would be saying his goodbyes to the team today at the Ciutat Esportiva

Ronald Koeman was brought in in place of Quique Setien in August 2020 and managed to win the Copa del Rey in his first year in charge. The tides have, however, turned against him and was fired after the team 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday, October 27.

This season, Barcelona has only managed four wins from 10 games, leaving them ninth placed on the table with a game in hand.  Barcelona under Koeman have lost four of their last six games in all competition with a terrible start into the UEFA Champion’s League.

They suffered embarrassing losses to Benfica in the Champion’s League (3-0), Atletico Madrid in La Liga (2-0), and succumbed to a 2-1 defeat in the El Classico against Real Madrid at the Nou Camp this weekend. After 67 games as coach, Koeman managed a record of 40 wins, 11 draws and 16 losses.

Rumours have it that the current Al Sadd head coach and former Barcelona midfielder, Xavi is being lined up as a possible replacement for Ronald Koeman.
