ASUU agrees to call off strike as govt agrees to exempt it from IPPIS.
Govt promises to settle Union with N70 billion

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has yesterday, Friday, agreed to call off its strike action which has put academic activities in the public universities on hold in the last eight months.

The leadership of the union during a meeting with the government team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, in Abuja, reached a consensus that would see lecturers return to the classrooms.

The government promised to pay all salary arrears before the 31st day of December s well as pledging to pay N40 billion and N30 billion as the Earned Allowance and University System Revitalisation respectively.

We can recall that the Federal Government earlier accepted the demand by the ASUU leadership to exempt the union members from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System pending the approval of their proposed payment system, the University Transparency and Accountability Solution.

ASUU is expected to announce the date for school resumption, only after reporting the the content its agreement with other organ of the academic union and get their consent to end the trike.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Ngige said

He said, “Many issues were discussed at the meeting including salary shortfall, the payment system and revitalisation of the university system. I am positive that all the issues would be resolved at our next meeting.”

The ASUU President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, simply said everything Ngige said was correct and declined further comment.
